Odometer Fixby Mike LukensFollowing are two photos of the back of the odometer in the 1996 Impala. The dark rings around the solder joints are cold solder joints. As they heat up and cool down during normal use, those joints will sometimes make contact, sometimes not. My thanks to Ed Runnion at the Region of Doom www.regionofdoom.com for making the procedure available. The discoloration along the land path shows that there is a lot of heat generated from this setup. And the heat probably increases as the joints become more loose. A better fix is probably the module that is available from the SuperStore. That would eliminate the heat problem.
This photo shows the connections after they have been resoldered. As I resoldered these joints, they took quite a bit of solder to fill in the hole. I was careful to not apply too much heat for fear of lifting the land going from one connector to the other. I suppose it was not a big deal as I could have just built a solder bridge between them anyway.
