Harmonic Dampener
by Mike Lukens

There WILL come a time when you think you have a power steering pump starting to squeal at you.  There WILL come a time when you will wonder how much a new pump costs and who can replace it for you.  Before you get all in a tizzy about replacing the pump (like I did!!), do yourself a BIG favor and try something first.

Get access to the front of the Harmonic Dampener. Scribe or scratch a mark on both the inner and outer rings then run the engine.  If after running, you see that the scratch marks do NOT line up, (refer to the photo below) then the squealing you are hearing is NOT the power steering pump but rather the Harmonic Dampener slipping.  (Thanks to Robin Moya for reminding me of this failure!!)

Now I don’t know if those rings can ever truly come apart but it would be a good idea to replace it and not take the chance.  At one time, Dal Slabaugh was shipping three of these every month so they ARE failing.
